The iconic fibreglass futuristic Futuro House (or Futuro pod) was designed by Matti Suuronen in 1968. This space age wonder, looking like it dropped directly from the set of “Lost in Space”, was originally designed to be used as a portable ski chalet. It is the OG off grid tiny house.
The few Futuro Houses that still exist (there are about 65 in existence) are now dotted around the world, in various states of preservation and disrepair.
The delightfully tangerine Futuro House in Joshua Tree, is situated in a perfect barren location, in the heart of Area 55, and although it is a private property, it can easily be seen from the street - ( and by “street” I mean dirt road - perfect!)
This Futuro house, or “UFO House” as they’re often called, is also a vacation rental - yes! you can stay in it! squee! Actually, it is the ONLY Futuro House in America you can rent for a short stay.
The Futuro house is about 26 feet in diameter and about 13 feet high. It has a space age aircraft entrance and stands on steel legs.
The Joshua tree Futuro House is extremely photogenic and well worth the bumpy dirt road ride out to see it.
