Welcome to Hamel Billboard

The Welcome to Hamel billboard is a double whammy - it’s painted on both sides! It stands in a pretty little garden and has the same classic car / retro license plate / road trippin’ theme that so many billboards along Route 66 have. Is it a rule or something? Anyhoo .. it is fun to see the same theme interpreted in so many different ways as you drive along.

Standing right next to the billboard is a 6 on 66 monument. These are dotted along Route 66 and we love them, they are giant 12-foot-tall Route 66 shields, standing at a zany angle, and with two holes cut out of the 6’s for you to stick your head through for all your selfie needs.

The 6 on 66 shields were originally conceived as a set of six of these giant shields placed along the last 100 miles of Route 66 (or the first 100 miles if you’re heading the other way!). However, they proved to be such popular roadside attractions that they keep adding more along Route 66.
