Sphere Las Vegas

So many of our favorite roadside attractions hail from an era long gone. What a treat to find a brand-new giant-sized light up ball of kitsch that seems as though it could be seen from the moon.

This is the world’s largest spherical structure, simply called The Sphere.

Inside you’ll find massive high-resolution screens, 4-D effects including wind and scent, and neck jarring all-encompassing visuals. But if you don’t want to fork out the hefty price of a ticket to go inside, the Sphere is also ever changing and ridiculously entertaining on the outside as well. Situated a block back from the strip, the sheer scale makes it visible from many parts of Las Vegas.

The exterior is made up of more than a million programmable LEDs that cover 580,000 square feet of programmable lighting that provide an eye-popping light show.

The content is ever changing, and I can imagine many meetings of the creative team workshopping everything in the world that was ever a round or spherical shape. On various visits we’ve seen eyeballs, snow globes, planets, smiley faces and golf balls. Along with all the glorious kitsch, some projections, including the planet Earth, are also emotional and moving (or maybe that’s the 99 cent margaritas talking) Sadly, advertising matter has also begun to creep in - dear Sphere programmers - that’s disappointing :-(

I’d say it’s a must see when visiting Las Vegas, but if you’re anywhere near the strip you won’t be able to not see it!
